Funeral March

Franz Schubert
(1797-1828)

Schubert's Funeral March, in E flat minor, scored for orchestra by Liszt, opens in the horns and bassoons, after which the leading theme appears in the clarinets, bassoons, horns and violas with pizzicato bass accompaniment, and is elaborately developed. The Trio is based upon a solemn theme in the cellos, then taken up in the other instruments, with thrilling effect. The principal theme, returning after the Trio, closes the march.
