Michael William Balfe

Irish composer, singer and violinist
(1808-70)



Balfe wrote many operas -- The Siege of Rochelle, The Maid of Artois, and Falstaff -- but his most famous opera was The Bohemian Girl. Balfe worked mostly in London and was one of the leading composers of 19th century English opera.
